How Farhike scoring works

In Farhike, being right is only the start. Your score for each prompt depends on how many other players chose the same country, so a rare right answer carries you further than a common one. Five pins add up to an expedition of up to 500 km.

The five tiers

TierDistanceWhat it means
Common30–44 kmThe answer most people reach for first.
Uncommon45–59 kmA step off the main road.
Rare60–74 kmOnly a few players pinned this one.
Elusive75–89 kmAlmost nobody thought of it.
Trailblazer90–100 kmThe rarest kind of right answer. A trail nobody else took.
Miss0 kmThat country isn't a right answer for this prompt.

How rarity is measured

For every prompt, Farhike counts which right answers players pin. Each answer's share of those pins is compared with an even split across all the prompt's right answers. An answer picked twice as often as an even split is Common; one picked less than a fifth as often is Trailblazer. This keeps tiers meaningful whether a prompt has eight right answers or sixty.

Distance within a tier

Each tier covers a range of distances, and an answer's place in that range follows its share too. Common runs from 30 km, for an answer picked eight or more times as often as an even split, up to 44 km at twice as often. Trailblazer runs from 90 km up to the full 100 km for an answer picked a fiftieth as often or less. The scale is logarithmic, so within a tier each halving of an answer's share adds the same distance, and a rarer answer never scores less than a more popular one.

Before anyone has played

Every day's count starts from zero, so the first players can't be measured against anyone. Until enough pins are in, Farhike starts from an estimate based on how often each country's English Wikipedia article is read: well-known countries are assumed to be common answers. The estimate already tells all five tiers apart and gives every answer its own distance. As real pins arrive, they steadily replace it: after about 300 pins on a prompt, the players count as much as the estimate.

The final count

While a day is in progress, tiers are refreshed every few minutes so players a few minutes apart see the same thing. Once the day has ended in every time zone, Farhike makes a final count of every pin. If your answer turned out rarer than it looked when you played, you gain the difference. A final count never takes distance away, and the result you already shared stays as it was.

Late expeditions

You can play any of the last seven expeditions from camp. They are scored with the same tiers, but they don't change the counts for that day, because the answers may already be public by then, and they don't extend your streak.
